Sacramento Police Officers Shoot Man Brandishing a Fake Gun
Sacramento, California – May 13, 2025: A tense confrontation unfolded in the streets of Sacramento after officers responded to reports of a man brandishing a firearm and threatening bystanders. The incident, which occurred near North 16th Street and North B Street, resulted in an officer-involved shooting and ended with the suspect hospitalized and later taken into custody.
The Sacramento Police Department Communication Center first received a 911 call at approximately 9:03 a.m. The caller reported a man walking in the middle of the street, waving a handgun in the air and pointing it at random people. The alarming nature of the situation prompted an urgent law enforcement response. Just five minutes later, at 9:08 a.m., the same caller contacted dispatch again, updating authorities that the suspect was now walking northbound near the 200 block of North 16th Street, still armed and behaving erratically.
At 9:13 a.m., the first responding officer (Officer #1) arrived on the scene and quickly located the suspect in the area described. Officers #2 and #3 arrived shortly afterward to assist in the unfolding situation. From a safe distance, the officers observed what appeared to be the grip of a handgun protruding from the suspect’s pocket. Given the nature of the 911 calls and the visible weapon, officers began issuing loud verbal commands for the suspect to stop moving, stay away from the weapon, and move onto the sidewalk.
The suspect, however, refused to comply with the officers' commands. Instead of backing away or remaining stationary, he advanced toward the officers. According to statements from the police and the body-worn camera footage reviewed, the suspect began shouting at the officers, telling them to shoot him. Despite the escalating danger, the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by backing away while continuing to give commands to stop and not reach for the firearm.
The situation reached a critical point when the suspect suddenly withdrew the object from his pocket. Officers, believing the suspect was drawing a firearm, reacted swiftly. An officer-involved shooting ensued, with all three officers discharging their service weapons. The suspect was struck multiple times and fell to the ground.
Immediately following the shooting, officers approached the suspect cautiously and disarmed him, removing what appeared to be a handgun from his right hand. They quickly began rendering emergency medical aid, applying first aid in an effort to stabilize him until emergency medical services could arrive. The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries but survived the encounter.
After receiving treatment, the suspect was later released from medical care and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. He now faces several charges, including brandishing an imitation firearm and resisting arrest. No officers or civilians were injured during the incident.
Following standard procedure, investigators with the Sacramento Police Department and outside agencies began a thorough investigation. The firearm recovered at the scene was examined and determined to be an imitation weapon, further complicating the nature of the incident. Despite being non-functional, the replica firearm closely resembled a real handgun, making it nearly indistinguishable in a high-stress, fast-moving situation.
The Sacramento Police Department emphasized that officers are trained to respond to threats involving firearms with utmost caution, especially when public safety is at risk. The decision to use force was made in response to the suspect’s non-compliance, threatening behavior, and the realistic appearance of the weapon.
As with all officer-involved shootings, this case will undergo a comprehensive internal review and an independent investigation. The department has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, and body-worn camera footage is expected to be released to the public in accordance with departmental policy.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous situations law enforcement officers face and the split-second decisions they must often make under extreme pressure.
