Raw Surveillance Footage Shows Cop Beating Man With Baton

Houston, Texas — On a recent morning earlier this month, a disturbing incident involving a Metro Police officer and a civilian unfolded on a local train platform, prompting swift internal action and a resignation. Surveillance video released by Metro Police showed a physical altercation that resulted in Officer Jairus Warren stepping down from his position. }; The altercation occurred between Officer Jairus Warren and a man identified as Darrell Giles. According to Metro Police Chief Vera Bumpers, the department’s internal review board determined that Warren had used excessive force during the encounter. Based on their findings, the board recommended the officer’s termination. Before the termination could be officially processed, Warren voluntarily resigned. The incident took place on a train platform where Giles was reportedly slumped over on a bench. Video footage—lacking audio—shows Officers Warren and D. Reynoso approaching Giles. After a brief verbal interaction, Warren is seen drawing his baton and striking Giles multiple times. Giles fell onto a bench and then to the ground as the blows continued. The physical confrontation lasted for about 19 seconds, with Warren continuing to strike Giles even after he was on the floor. }; Officer Reynoso appeared to intervene during the latter part of the incident. According to Metro Police, Reynoso was cleared of any wrongdoing following the investigation but will be required to complete additional training before fully returning to duty. He has since resumed his role with the department.Following the incident, emergency medical personnel evaluated Giles at the scene. Later, while in custody, Giles complained of pain in his arms and received additional medical care. Ultimately, the charges against him were dropped after the facts of the case and the video footage came to light. In a later interview with local news, Giles recounted the moment he was struck. He stated, “I thought he pulled a gun out. He hit me so hard, he knocked me to the ground. The first couple licks, he’s just standing over me going bom, bom, bom making some noise.” Giles also said he had little memory of the details after the initial strikes and described himself as bracing for further blows while holding his arm up. }; Chief Bumpers also released earlier footage from the same day, showing officers interacting with Giles on the platform. According to police officials, Giles had been approached multiple times that morning and was told to leave the station by both train operators and law enforcement officers. They reported that he had been combative during those encounters. However, Giles disputed that narrative, telling reporters that he complied with officers’ initial request to leave. He said he only returned to the platform to retrieve his cellphone, which he had forgotten. Giles claimed it was during this second encounter that Officer Warren struck him without warning. “When he told me to leave, I left,” Giles stated. “I only came back to get my phone, and that’s when I saw him again.” }; The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has taken over the investigation to determine whether criminal charges will be filed against Warren. Chief Bumpers reaffirmed the department’s commitment to transparency and accountability and stated that any excessive use of force would be addressed promptly. }; The incident has drawn significant public attention, and local civil rights groups have called for further oversight and reform of use-of-force policies. As the investigation proceeds, the Metro Police Department has promised to review its procedures and ensure that officers are properly trained in de-escalation techniques.
