Indianapolis Police Shoot Man Who Pointed Gun at an Officer

Indianapolis, Indiana – May 2, 2024: A tense and potentially deadly situation unfolded in Indianapolis after police responded to multiple 911 calls regarding a man armed with a gun and making threats in a residential area. The incident ended in an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 35-year-old Lemar Qualls. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into the events that led to the fatal shooting.

The first emergency call came in just after 2:00 p.m., reporting a man waving a firearm and threatening residents near a housing complex in the 600 block of East 38th Street. Security footage later confirmed the presence of the suspect, identified as Lemar Qualls, as he was seen walking along the perimeter of the housing complex while carrying a handgun. The alarming nature of the call prompted a rapid response from multiple IMPD officers.

While officers were en route to the first location, a second 911 call came into dispatch. This caller, located in the 3900 block of Broadway Street, reported that a man matching Qualls’ description was now on her front porch. According to the caller, Qualls was still armed and behaving aggressively, pointing the weapon and making threats to those nearby. This update shifted officers' focus to the new location, where the situation had become even more urgent.

IMPD Officers Buck and Flick were the first to arrive at the residence mentioned in the second call. As they approached the home, they saw Qualls seated on the front porch. Officer Flick took the lead in approaching the suspect and issued loud verbal commands, instructing Qualls to put his hands in the air. Body-worn camera audio captured Officer Flick shouting, “Hands up!” as he stepped onto the porch.

Qualls, who was sitting in a chair, had a handgun in his right hand. As Officer Flick advanced, Qualls suddenly raised the firearm and pointed it directly at him. Faced with an immediate threat to life, Officer Flick discharged his service weapon. Officer Buck, positioned nearby, also fired his weapon in response to the perceived danger. A shot from one of the officers appears to have struck the gun, causing it to slide across the patio floor.

Following the gunfire, both officers held their positions and waited for backup before moving in to secure the scene. Officer #3 arrived shortly after and approached the home cautiously. As he neared the porch, Qualls' firearm was seen lying on the stairs, having apparently come to rest there after being dislodged by a bullet. Preliminary analysis suggests that one of the rounds struck the firearm’s magazine, causing Qualls to lose his grip and rendering the weapon inoperable.

Once additional officers were on the scene and it was deemed safe to approach, Qualls was secured and officers began administering medical aid. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services arrived shortly thereafter and transported him to Methodist Hospital. Despite emergency treatment, Qualls was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

No officers were injured during the confrontation, and no nearby residents or bystanders were harmed. The quick response and coordination among officers likely prevented further violence or injury. The body-worn camera footage, along with security videos and physical evidence from the scene, will be critical components of the ongoing investigation.

As standard protocol, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of internal and external reviews. The IMPD has stated that it remains committed to full transparency in the case and is cooperating with oversight agencies to ensure a fair and thorough investigation.

This incident underscores the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of firearm-related 911 calls. The IMPD is urging the public to remain patient while the investigation continues and all facts are reviewed before conclusions are drawn.
