Harris County Deputy Shoots Man Advancing With a Cross
Houston, Texas — May 1, 2024: A 61-year-old man was fatally shot by Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies after he reportedly failed to comply with commands and advanced toward them while holding a religious symbol, following a brief but tense confrontation in North Harris County. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight in a residential neighborhood, is now under official investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office.
At approximately 7:17 p.m., dispatchers with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls from concerned residents. Callers reported that a man was standing in the middle of the road in the 3200 block of Palston Bend Lane, obstructing traffic. The man was described as behaving erratically and was reportedly holding both a knife and a large cross above his head, creating alarm among drivers and nearby residents.
In response, two deputies were immediately dispatched to the scene. Just two minutes later, at approximately 7:19 p.m., the deputies arrived at the location and quickly located the individual, later identified as 61-year-old Emile Ciampicini. He was standing in the roadway, clearly visible to passing traffic, holding a knife in one hand and a cross in the other. Witnesses said he appeared agitated but was not interacting with anyone directly at that moment.
As they exited their patrol vehicles, the deputies began issuing loud verbal commands instructing Ciampicini to drop the knife and get on the ground. According to initial reports, Ciampicini complied with the first command and dropped the knife to the ground. However, he refused to follow the deputies' additional orders to lie down or retreat from the area.
Instead, Ciampicini began advancing toward the deputies, continuing to hold the cross above his head. Deputies repeatedly instructed him to stop and get on the ground, but he did not comply. The situation quickly escalated when Ciampicini continued walking toward the deputies despite their warnings, still carrying the cross and ignoring repeated directives.
Feeling that the situation was becoming increasingly dangerous, one of the deputies discharged his service weapon, striking Ciampicini multiple times. As soon as the man fell to the ground, deputies approached cautiously, secured the scene, and immediately requested emergency medical services.
The deputies began administering first aid on the scene, attempting to stabilize Ciampicini’s condition while awaiting the arrival of EMS. Despite their efforts, paramedics later pronounced Ciampicini deceased at the scene.
The shooting occurred in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and several neighbors either witnessed the incident or heard the gunshots. Investigators cordoned off the area for several hours as crime scene units collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. A knife and cross were both recovered from the location where Ciampicini was shot.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office stated that the deputies involved were wearing body cameras, and footage of the incident would be reviewed as part of the internal investigation. The deputy who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol following officer-involved shootings.
Officials have not yet determined Ciampicini’s motive or state of mind at the time of the incident. No prior criminal history or mental health background has been released, pending the results of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are also reviewing whether Ciampicini was under the influence of any substances that may have contributed to his behavior.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct an independent review of the incident to determine whether the use of force was legally justified. Community leaders have called for transparency as the investigation progresses.
