Chicago Cops Shoot Man During Gun Battle Following Chase into Indiana
Hammond, Indiana — May 8, 2025: A high-risk police operation involving Chicago Police Officers and a suspect wanted for a violent felony ended in a fatal shooting after a pursuit crossed into Indiana and escalated into a gunfight.
The incident began at approximately 5:49 p.m. when Chicago Police responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a person with a firearm in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue, located on the far southeast side of the city. The individual in question, later identified as 50-year-old Joseph Navarro, was reportedly armed and wanted in connection with an aggravated battery investigation. The case had prompted an active search by law enforcement due to the seriousness of the charges.
Officers conducting surveillance in the area observed Navarro as he exited a building and entered a nearby vehicle. Attempting to apprehend him, officers initiated a stop. However, Navarro refused to comply and fled the scene in his vehicle, triggering a police pursuit that ultimately extended across state lines into Hammond, Indiana.
The pursuit concluded near the intersection of Dearborn and Gostlin Streets in Hammond, where Navarro lost control of his vehicle and crashed. Officers quickly surrounded the vehicle and began to approach with caution, understanding the suspect was believed to be armed and dangerous.
As officers moved in to make contact, gunfire erupted. According to police reports and witness statements, Navarro fired multiple rounds at the officers, prompting them to return fire. In the exchange, Navarro was struck several times. The officers immediately secured the scene and rendered medical aid until emergency responders arrived.
Navarro was transported to St. Catherine Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His injuries were determined to be the result of the police gunfire during the exchange.
Two Chicago Police Officers involved in the shooting were also transported to the hospital for evaluation. While neither officer sustained life-threatening injuries, they were admitted for observation as a precaution, following department protocol. Both officers were reported to be in good condition.
A firearm was recovered from the scene near Navarro’s vehicle, confirming that the suspect had been armed during the confrontation. Ballistics testing will be conducted to determine how many shots were fired by both the suspect and officers during the brief but intense exchange.
The incident is now under joint investigation by the Chicago Police Department, the Hammond Police Department, and other relevant local and state agencies. Internal review boards will examine all body-worn camera footage and physical evidence to ensure full transparency and accountability in accordance with established policies for officer-involved shootings.
Authorities have not released the identities of the officers involved, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Both officers will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following such incidents.
The area surrounding the crash site was temporarily closed off as investigators combed through the scene, interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. Residents in the neighborhood were advised to stay indoors during the response, but no additional injuries were reported among bystanders or civilians.
Law enforcement officials noted that Navarro was a known offender with an extensive criminal history, and that he had active warrants related to violent conduct. His prior record is expected to be a key component of the investigation into his actions leading up to the deadly encounter.
Community leaders have called for patience as the investigation unfolds, while emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue and trust between police and the public. A full report is expected to be made available once all findings are reviewed.
